No Sea Scouting in Maldives. WHY?

I first met a Sea Scout while I was in Narita,Japan in 2004 attending the SAJ 2003/04 INTERNATIONAL SCOUT FORUM, The whole concept of Sea Scouting was new to me then. But as I came to know more about Sea Scouting, I started to wonder why Maldives doesn't have Sea Scouting.

For a country where 99% of its geographical area is ocean,it is surprising that we don't have Sea Scouts in Maldives. Sea Scouting, without doubt would be the best form of Scouting for Maldivian boys and girls. If introduced, Sea Scouting would help the Maldivian Scouts to be more active and would help them in exploring their true environment.

I always believed that experience is the best teacher, And for a growing up Maldivian teenager, there would be no better experience than going out to the sea and exploring the beauty of our oceans.

Lets come back to our main topic, WHY?

I have personally tried to find an answer to this question and the only answer I tend to get is, "Having Sea Scouts is a good idea...". Yes! This is not an answer but a comment, but this is all I get in reply, may it be a parent, scout or leader.

Its time somebody take the lead and propose the registration of a Sea Scout Group to the Scout Association of Maldives.

  1. Actually we did have sea scouting in Maldives if we look into history we can see it (my dad was a sea scout of EPSS too) leaders like Mendis and all had guided the sea scouts in Maldives and they had a good time too.. however latter sea scouting was not functioning ...

officially scouting has three branches ... Cub Scouts, Scouts and Rovers!! so WOSM promotes countries to stick to those ... but they do not forbid other branches or sections ... it is encouraged for NSOs to include sea scouting stuff and other stuff into the program according to geography etc of that country... so in Maldives the program includes sea activities ...

I had always wanted to be a sea scout and personally i believe sea scouting should be started again in Maldives ... but i also agree that we should stick to the three sections and we should embed those important scouting skills into our current program ...

    cheers
